but, such a new compiler would have to reinvent everything from
scratch.  A lot have been done in recent years in terms for dependent
types (Nurpl, epigram, etc.), functional languages implementations
techniques and optimizations (OCaml, Haskell, etc.).  Furthermore
it may attract more students.  

Of course, that is not said to underestimate the task; just to remind
that not everything has to be reinvented.
